An open Dritz 11164 wooden 60-spool rack suits a visible set of frequently used threads. A Dritz 788 thread box suits a small collection that must go back into a cupboard. The larger ArtBin 9002AB thread box is worth comparing when covered storage matters more than a wall display. The two boxes are alternatives to a rack, rather than different kinds of wall rack.
Start by separating active thread from backup stock. A rack large enough for every duplicate spool may take space without making the next sewing session easier. This comparison uses manufacturer specifications; we have not loaded the racks or measured how quickly users find a colour.

The Dritz rack has two pull-out legs for tabletop use and can also be wall mounted. Its published overall dimensions do not establish the depth occupied by the extended legs, so leave desk space for that support arrangement. For wall use, choose mounting hardware for the wall construction and loaded rack; the spool count is not a mounting-load rating.
Sixty positions do not mean sixty of every spool
Dritz specifies 1.25 in spindle height and 1.375 in spacing. That spacing is the buying detail most likely to change how useful the rack is. Measure the widest part of your spool, not just its centre hole. Two 2 in wide spools cannot occupy adjacent positions 1.375 in apart without their bodies overlapping. Skipping one position gives a nominal centre distance of 2 × 1.375 = 2.75 in, but reduces usable capacity. This is a spacing calculation, not a loaded-rack test.
Likewise, a spool hole must fit the spindle and the spool must sit securely. Tall serger cones are not automatically compatible because a product says “thread rack.” If cones dominate the collection, establish their diameter, height and support needs before ordering a standard-spool rack.
Covered storage needs a different fit check
The Dritz 788 has internal spindles and a transparent, stackable case. Its edge slots can guide thread during hand sewing, but storing a spool does not make the box an appropriate machine thread stand. Machine feeding needs the thread path and orientation specified by the machine.
ArtBin’s catalogue lists different 9002AB capacities for different spool diameters, including 30 spools at 45 mm diameter. That is a useful reminder that a large headline capacity depends on spool size. Lay out your actual collection, including tall or unusually shaped spools, rather than buying against the largest advertised count. Neither covered case is described here as airtight or a humidity-control system.
A small-room purchase sequence
- Count the colours and thread types used on current projects separately from duplicates.
- Measure representative small, wide and tall spools; note bobbins stored with them.
- Decide whether the thread needs to stay visible or be covered and put away.
- Mark the rack outline or box footprint on its proposed wall, desk or shelf.
- Allow access to remove a spool, open a lid or lift out a tray without moving the sewing machine.
A practical arrangement is an active set near the machine and covered backup storage elsewhere. Colour sorting helps retrieval, but label thread type or weight too; visually similar colours are not necessarily interchangeable for a project.
