For ordinary clothing seams and hems, compare Gütermann Sew-all, Mettler Metrosene or Coats & Clark Dual Duty XP All Purpose. For visibly heavier topstitching, Dual Duty XP Heavy is a different thread requiring a larger needle. It is not automatically the better construction thread for every worn seam.
These choices use manufacturer identities and needle recommendations. We have not tested seam strength, abrasion, lint or tension consistency against each other.

Mettler Silk-Finish Cotton is a cotton line. Metrosene is the polyester line to search for here. A 1,000 m Sew-all spool contains approximately 1,094 yd, calculated using 1 yd =0.9144 m; it is not 110 yd. These identity and unit differences matter before any price comparison.
Construction seams do not always need thicker thread
A broken seam may result from weak fabric, insufficient seam allowance, an unsuitable stitch or the repair being placed through already damaged material. A thicker thread alone does not correct those causes. Inspect the fabric and reconstruct the seam where sound material can support it.
For stretch garments, the stitch needs to accommodate extension. Polyester fiber does not make an ordinary straight seam stretch enough automatically. Use the appropriate stitch and fabric needle, and sample the repair at its expected movement.
Heavier topstitching needs a compatible setup
Dual Duty XP Heavy’s maker recommends a 16 or 18 machine needle. Check that the machine and material allow that needle size before purchase. It may be unsuitable for delicate fabric or a machine with a narrower supported range. The heavier visible line is a buying reason; an unmeasured promise that it prevents repeat repairs is not.
The top and bobbin threading arrangement should follow the machine and thread instructions. Do not assume every thick top thread belongs in the bobbin too. Sample the stitch balance on the actual folded seam before repairing the garment.
Compare the length you will use
For a repeated neutral color, compare delivered cost per 1,000 m: price divided by spool length in metres, multiplied by 1,000. A hypothetical $8 spool containing 1,000 m costs $8 per 1,000 m; a $3 spool containing 150 m costs $20 per 1,000 m. These figures illustrate the calculation and are not current prices.
For occasional color matching, a small spool may still cost less in total and leave less unused thread. A bulk embroidery cone is not an all-purpose repair thread merely because it is polyester. This guide does not recommend an unidentified Sulky 2,500 yd/Tex 27 line as a verified general-sewing purchase.
Recommendation and sources
Choose an all-purpose line that matches the garment color, needle and machine. Choose Heavy only when the intended finish and compatible setup justify it. Amazon searches specify the thread line and format; verify shade and spool length before checkout.
