For a small accessible upholstery seam, build the set around Dritz curved needles 9020 and thread chosen for the fabric. Coats & Clark Extra Strong Upholstery S964 is a documented bonded-nylon thread option, not an unspecified all-purpose spool set. Add scissors, measuring tools and any fabric support the damage requires. A handheld sewing machine is a different tool and does not solve every furniture seam.

Curved needles: access around the seam

Dritz 9020 contains one curved needle each in 3, 4, 5 and 6-inch sizes. The manufacturer assigns the 3 and 4-inch needles to slip-stitching cushions and attaching outer fabric, with larger sizes for other upholstery work. Curvature helps when the needle must return to the accessible side; it does not prove easier penetration through every dense material.

For a small opened seam, choose a needle that can follow the intended path without pushing into concealed hard parts. If the fabric cover is removable, taking it off may offer better access than stitching against the filling. Do not force a needle with pliers merely to overcome a mismatch between needle, fabric and available space.

Upholstery thread: identify the actual line

Coats & Clark S964 is 100% bonded nylon, 15 weight, 150 yards. The maker lists hand needle sizes 1–5 and machine sizes 16 or 18. Those are line-specific recommendations, not instructions to put the thread into every household machine or hand needle.

This is different from Coats Dual Duty XP Heavy polyester and from ordinary all-purpose thread. Compare the exact name, fiber, spool length and color. A strong thick thread can still be a poor match for a fine fabric: the fabric around the stitch must support the load.

Long straight needles serve another job

Dritz 9021 supplies 6, 8, 10 and 12-inch straight needles, with the maker describing spring/webbing, padding and tufting uses. It is not the curved-needle set above. Include it only if your work actually needs that long straight path; it is not a better small-seam tool solely because it is longer.

Decide whether there is sound fabric to sew

An opened seam with intact seam allowance is different from a tear through weakened face fabric. On an intact seam, the existing construction provides a useful guide. On a tear, inspect whether the surrounding fabric can hold stitches and whether a backing patch or replacement panel is needed. Pulling frayed edges together can create puckering and leave little support.

Compare the repair thread against the fabric in the room’s normal light. Test needle passage and stitch appearance on spare matching fabric when available. A marking tool is optional for a patch layout, and its removal must be tested; it does not strengthen the repair.

Price a usable set

Count the items you need: suitable needle, matching thread, scissors, and patch/backing material when required. General kits can contribute the scissors and measuring tape, but dozens of garment pins or tiny assorted spools do not establish upholstery capability. These recommendations are based on manufacturer definitions, not our own strength or furniture-wear testing.

Choose 9020 for the appropriate curved hand-sewing path and S964 when its thickness and fiber suit the fabric. Choose 9021 for documented long straight-needle work. If damage involves springs, padding, frame attachments or extensive rotten fabric, buying a seam kit alone does not define the repair; assess those components before attempting a cosmetic closure.
