The Brother SE600 is a discontinued combination machine with 103 sewing stitches and a 4 x 4 inch embroidery field. It can serve regular embroidery as well as occasional personalization when the designs fit; calling embroidery a main hobby does not by itself disqualify this machine.
The 2026 buying decision: used SE600 or current SE700
Brother now marks the SE600 discontinued and out of stock, and its replacement guide names the SE700 as the current successor. That changes the recommendation. A used SE600 can still make sense when it is complete, demonstrably working, and meaningfully cheaper. A buyer paying near-new money should choose the SE700 instead.
| Check before buying | Used SE600 | Current SE700 |
|---|---|---|
| Embroidery field | 4 x 4 inches | 4 x 4 inches |
| Built-in embroidery designs | 80 | 135 |
| Design transfer | USB port | Wireless LAN and Design Database Transfer |
| Sewing stitches | 103 | 103 |
| Best fit | A complete bargain with a successful stitch-out | A first machine with current retail support |
For a used SE600, require the embroidery unit, 4 x 4 frame, embroidery foot, foot controller, power cord, bobbin case, and a clean test stitch-out. Do not value a machine from a power-on photo alone. The carriage must initialize correctly, the touch screen must register across its full area, and the machine should sew and embroider without error messages.
Review Brother’s current SE700 specifications and buyer route . The page names the exact machine and current package, which is safer than a mixed marketplace search.
The field and workflow decide the fit
For a name or motif, measure the stitch-data dimensions rather than the towel, shirt or bag. A 3 x 3 inch motif fits the field; a 3 x 6 inch name does not fit in one placement. A physically larger hoop does not increase the machine’s stitch field. Splitting or shrinking a design creates additional alignment or density decisions.
The SE600 imports embroidery designs by USB and has a 3.2-inch color display. It does not have wireless LAN. The SE700 adds wireless transfer but retains the same 4 x 4 maximum field, so it does not solve a recurring larger-design requirement.
Brother’s SE600 documentation confirms the field, USB route and discontinued status. The SE600 manual library explains file formats, frame fitting and mode changes.
The sewing side is a separate requirement
The SE600 has a speed control and needle up/down function as well as utility stitches and ten buttonhole styles. Those controls matter more than a claim that 103 stitches will keep a beginner from outgrowing it. It has no adjustable presser-foot pressure. Inspect the supplied sewing feet and demonstrate the actual garment seam or buttonhole you intend to make.
One combination machine saves a second machine location, but cannot sew seams while it is embroidering. The embroidery unit still needs storage and installation. If you already have a sewing machine and want both tasks available separately, compare an embroidery-only route with the field you need.
A meaningful used-machine inspection
Keep the existing sewing and embroidery demonstration above. Import a supported design and stitch it completely using equivalent fabric and stabilizer. Include a color change and stop/restart. Examine alignment, puckering and the back, then switch to ordinary sewing and make a short seam and buttonhole.
Check carriage movement, frame attachment, touch response and the cutter, not merely whether the screen powers on. Identify missing compatible parts before calculating machine price + replacements + service quote + delivery. Do not assume every remaining new-stock or used offer has the same warranty eligibility.
Verdict
Shortlist a complete, demonstrated SE600 when both sewing and compact embroidery meet named projects and its total offer is preferable to a current alternative. Compare the SE700 for its current package and wireless route; compare a larger-field model when design dimensions demand it.
The two purchase searches are explicitly different models. No hands-on stitch-quality, reliability, learning-time or current-price result is claimed in this manufacturer-based review.
