For decorative lettering or brush strokes on washable fabric, compare Marvy Uchida Fabric Marker Brush 722. For opaque painted shapes, compare POSCA PC-5M with its textile fixing instructions. These are permanent decoration tools, not temporary sewing-layout markers.
Sakura explicitly says its Koi Coloring Brush Pens are not recommended on fabric intended to be washed. A gel pen or general sketch marker is likewise outside this shortlist without documented textile use. Similar-looking tips do not establish the same wash performance.
Two documented textile routes
| Marker | Documented tip/medium | Fixing and care | Useful reason to choose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marvy Fabric Marker Brush 722 | Broad brush-shaped point, pigmented permanent ink | No heat treatment or prewashing required by maker; dry clean or gentle wash | Varying-width lettering and decorative lines |
| POSCA PC-5M | Opaque paint, 1.8–2.5 mm bullet tip | Prepare fabric and heat-fix per textile instructions; wash inside out at low temperature | More opaque shapes and medium lines |
These are specification-based recommendations. We have not tested wash cycles, bleeding, opacity or stiffness on your fabric. An opaque paint specification supports considering it for dark fabric, not a claim that every color covers every dark textile in one pass.
Marvy 722: buy the actual fabric line
The brush line is different from an unspecified Marvy sketch set. The documented 722_6B set has six colors: orange, pale green, cool grey, flesh tone, crimson lake and fluorescent violet. The 722_6A selection contains black, red, green, blue, yellow and brown. Buy the palette needed for the project rather than an invented eight-color identity.
Its no-heat requirement can matter for a fabric that should not be ironed. Test on the actual material before committing to a visible label. Permanent ink is not an erasable guide for stitching: it belongs in the design itself.
POSCA: preparation and fixing are part of the purchase
POSCA directs washing new fabric to remove finishes and used fabric to remove dirt before marking. Use a backing beneath the work to absorb bleed-through. After the design is dry, the maker directs ironing from the reverse without steam, within the fabric’s permitted temperature. It also describes a hair-dryer method for materials that cannot be ironed.
The maker recommends washing the finished item inside out at low temperature. Do not assume Marvy’s no-heat instructions apply to POSCA, or that POSCA’s fixing method makes any non-textile gel pen washable. A high-temperature routine that damages the base fabric is not acceptable simply because the paint needs fixing.
A sample that answers the buying question
Use an offcut of the same pretreated fabric and backing. Draw the intended line width and a small filled area. Let it dry and fix it using that product’s instructions. Check appearance and handling, then wash it using the intended permitted care routine. This is a proposed reader test, not a result we have measured.
For a sewn project, decorate flat panels where possible and keep paint out of seam allowances when it could affect handling. If the aim is marking a dart or cut line for later removal, use the temporary-marker guide instead of permanent paint.
Recommendation and sources
Choose the 722 fabric brush line for variable-width ink decoration with the maker’s gentle-care instructions, or PC-5M for a medium opaque paint line with textile fixing. Amazon searches identify the line and set; check actual colors and quantities.
