A conventional zipper foot (Amazon search) can attach on either side on some machines; it is not necessarily fixed to one seam position. An adjustable zipper/piping foot adds its own lateral positioning mechanism. Compare the actual attachment and needle positions before assuming every garment or bag needs an upgrade.

Brother’s ordinary foot and SA161 example

Brother CS7000X instructions show using zipper foot I on the appropriate attachment side for the selected zipper seam. Brother SA161/F036N is a separate adjustable zipper and piping foot whose position can be set beside the zipper or piping. Its single stitch opening requires the permitted straight-stitch setup. Brother publishes a machine list and notes adapter requirements for certain models; it is not a universal foot for every low-looking shank.

The SA161 list includes XM2701. Do not infer CS7000X compatibility merely because this article also discusses that machine’s ordinary foot; confirm the exact accessory approval for the intended machine.

What adjustment actually changes

An adjustable attachment can position its sole beside a raised zipper or piping cord. A conventional left/right zipper foot, sometimes combined with a supported needle-position change, can also serve many centered or lapped zipper methods. Neither tool chooses the seam location for you. Baste or otherwise position the zipper as the pattern requires and keep the teeth/coil clear of the needle.

An invisible zipper is a distinct insertion method; a foot with grooves designed for that method is another documented accessory. Adjustable does not mean it replaces every concealed-zipper foot, piping foot or specialized attachment.

Set up without a needle strike

Install and tighten the foot as its instructions direct, select the permitted stitch/needle position, then turn the handwheel through a full stitch cycle to check clearance before powered sewing. Do not select zigzag simply because the foot physically mounts. Recheck after moving an adjustable foot or changing needle position.

For the SA161, follow the original instructions’ screw adjustment and placement sequence. Use a sample with the intended zipper, fabric and seam stack. Thick intersections still raise questions about feeding and machine capacity; a narrow foot is not evidence that the machine can sew every bag material.

Keep or add an accessory?

Keep the supplied compatible foot if it gives the required access and stitch placement. Add an approved adjustable accessory when its positioning or piping function addresses a real limitation. Rare zipper use does not automatically make a conventional foot easier, and frequent garment sewing does not establish an adjustable foot as better value. No setup-speed or accuracy test was performed.
