A detachable wide table adds fabric support; it does not make the machine’s throat larger or turn a free arm into a permanently different machine. Brother CS7000X supplies a detachable wide table and also converts to free-arm use. You can choose different support arrangements on that same machine.
Separate three dimensions
Support area is the surface holding the project around the bed. Throat space is the usable opening to the right of the needle. Free-arm access is the exposed bed shape around which a suitable tube can fit. A broad extension table changes the first; it does not automatically change the other two.
Janome MC6650 is a flat-bed model with a documented 10 × 4.7-inch work opening and a 20.3 × 8.6-inch footprint. It is a specific large-workspace alternative, rather than evidence that every machine sold with a wide table has those dimensions or lacks a free arm.
| Project issue | Relevant feature |
|---|---|
| Quilt weight hanging off the bed | Adequate level support around the work, including behind and beside it |
| Rolled or folded quilt cannot fit right of needle | Throat opening; a left-side extension does not enlarge it |
| Sleeve or cuff to sew around an arm | Free arm of suitable size, or another access technique |
| Shared table must be cleared | Actual machine/table weight, detachable parts and storage footprint |
Large fabric needs support beyond the front
A table can help carry fabric, but a large quilt can still pull from the side or rear. Arrange a stable, level surface and support the work’s weight rather than dragging it through the needle. A cabinet insert or another suitable surrounding support may serve a similar purpose. Neither support arrangement increases penetration or feeding capacity.
Small pieces can also be sewn with a wide table installed. More surface does not inherently block your hands or make zipper work difficult. Remove the table when the intended access or room layout calls for it. For a free-arm machine, remove the specified flat-bed attachment too; taking off only a separate extension may not expose the arm.
Buying and room fit
Measure the complete operating arrangement with fabric and operator access, then the storage arrangement. A detachable support can fit a shared room if it can be stored conveniently; it is not reserved for a permanent quilting station. Confirm whether a table is included in the exact package and whether an optional table is approved for the model.
Choose the machine’s functions and throat/access first, then a suitable support plan. CS7000X offers the documented table/free-arm combination; MC6650 offers a different flat-bed/workspace arrangement. No setup-time, fatigue or accuracy comparison establishes a universal narrow-bed winner.
