Tailor’s chalk and a chalk pencil (Amazon search) can both make a narrow line when their marking edge is kept sharp. The practical differences are grip, sharpening and removal on your fabric, rather than a rule that slab chalk is only for broad marks and pencils only work on dark cloth.

Two actual marking tools

Prym’s tailor’s chalk (Amazon search) slabs are 50 × 50 mm and come in white or colored versions. Their edge can be sharpened for a finer line. Prym chalk pencils with an erasing brush are available in white, pink and blue; the pencil shape offers a different grip and the brush is intended to help remove the mark. Neither listing establishes that every fabric will release every mark.

Task Slab chalk Chalk pencil
Mark a long cutting or alteration line Use a sharp edge against the appropriate guide Use the sharpened point against the guide
Mark a small notch, dart point or button position A sharp corner can make a small mark The point may suit your grip and the location
Dark fabric A contrasting pale chalk may show A contrasting pale pencil may show
Light fabric Choose a visible color that passes removal testing Same requirement; pencil form alone does not determine contrast

Make the removal test part of selection

Try the actual tool on a scrap of the actual fabric, including any lining or layer the mark may touch. Check both visibility and removal using the product’s instructions. A mark that brushes away on one woven fabric can behave differently on a textured or finished fabric. Do not assume all chalk is the same composition or that all pencil marks wash out.

Remove marks before pressing unless that exact product explicitly permits the intended heat treatment. Keep the marking light enough to identify the line without grinding pigment into the fabric. For a dart, transfer both the point and the pattern’s other required references; a finer tool cannot repair an incorrectly transferred location.

Which should you buy?

Choose the tool that gives a controlled, visible, removable line in your usual fabric and a comfortable grip. A sharpened slab may suit long marks; a pencil may suit small references or your hand position. These are handling choices, without a measured beginner-accuracy or speed ranking. You may want two colors more than two shapes if your projects range from pale to dark fabric.
