A straight-stitch-only machine cannot form zigzag, a machine satin border or ordinary automatic buttonholes. A multi-stitch utility machine can still form a straight seam, but its additional controls and supported techniques differ. Compare exact models rather than assuming one-stitch machines always have fewer settings or faster setup.
A specific functional comparison
Juki TL-2010Q offers straight stitch only, adjustable length up to 6 mm, variable sewing speed, a knee lift and extension table. Brother CS7000X offers 70 stitches, seven one-step buttonholes, adjustable electronic settings, a speed slider, free arm, drop feed and a detachable wide table. Both can be useful for piecing and woven seams; the Brother offers additional stitch operations.
| Operation | TL-2010Q | CS7000X |
|---|---|---|
| Straight woven seam or piecing | Documented straight-stitch role | Documented utility/piecing role |
| Zigzag edge finish or dense zigzag appliqué | Not available | Supported stitch selection/setup |
| Automatic buttonhole | Not available | Seven one-step styles |
| Tubular access via free arm | Flat-bed style; use another access method | Free arm, if the opening fits |
| Straight-stitch quilting | Appropriate specified foot/feed setup | Appropriate specified foot/feed setup |
No stitch-quality or speed-under-load test establishes which makes a better straight seam. The Juki’s controls show why one stitch does not mean no adjustments. The Brother can be set to its straight stitch without learning every decorative option before the first seam.
What your planned garment requires
A woven shirt may need seams, darts, zipper or buttonholes and edge finishing. A straight-stitch machine can do many seams and suitable zipper work, with the correct foot, but you need another planned method for buttonholes and raw edges. Hand-worked buttonholes, bound seams or another machine may be deliberate choices; they are not automatic reasons the garment is impossible.
For a knit hem or seam that needs stretch, do not assume an ordinary tight straight line stretches adequately. Compare the exact material and technique, with suitable needle/thread and a sample stretch check. Zigzag or a documented stretch stitch is one utility-machine route; an overlocker/coverstitch is a different construction. A straight-only machine’s lack of zigzag is a real limitation when your planned method requires it.
General machine or dedicated station?
For one machine expected to cover buttonholes, woven repairs and varied seam finishing, the CS7000X-type feature set provides those documented operations. For a dedicated straight-seam/piecing role, the TL-2010Q may fit, especially when other operations are already covered. Do not assume a multi-stitch machine cannot replace a straight-only machine for a particular operation; it may meet that need perfectly well.
Compare usable workspace, bed/access, approved feet, voltage and current total cost. Neither one-stitch nor multi-stitch labels establish durability, heavy-layer capacity or easier learning. A thick hem remains a question about the exact seam stack and machine, not a stitch-count result.
