Quick take

The Bernette b35 is the kind of machine that makes sense when you want sewing to stay practical. The current 2026 Bernette 30-series specifications list 23 stitches, a one-step buttonhole, 5 mm maximum stitch width, 4 mm maximum stitch length, front-loading hook, manual tension adjustment, seven included presser-foot soles, and an 860-stitch-per-minute maximum.

The controls that decide the purchase

The b35 has separate stitch-selection, width and length controls. Its one-step buttonhole and needle-threading aid distinguish it from a machine with preset stitch dimensions and a four-step buttonhole. Those are concrete conveniences; mechanical controls alone do not establish a shorter learning curve.

Task What the b35 provides What remains manual
Repeated buttonholes A sliding buttonhole foot and one-step sequence Fabric support, test stitching and positioning each hole
Repairing a sleeve or trouser leg A removable accessory table exposes the free arm The opening must fit around the arm or be sewn flat
Changing stitch dimensions Width up to 5 mm and length up to 4 mm Choose a setting appropriate to the fabric and seam
Beginning slowly Pedal-controlled speed No separate speed limiter or start/stop button
Changing fabric Thread tension adjustment and a higher foot-lift position No user-adjustable presser-foot pressure

The distinction between foot lift and foot pressure matters. Extra lift creates access to put fabric under the foot; it does not change the pressure applied while sewing. Buyers who need pressure adjustment for changing fabric behavior should compare a model that documents that control.

What is included, and what quilting adds

Bernette lists seven soles: zigzag, buttonhole, zipper, button sewing, blindstitch, satin stitch and hemmer. The ordinary soles snap onto a holder; the holder itself is secured by a screw. A listing for a universal snap-on foot does not establish compatibility with every attachment.

For basic garment construction, the included zipper and buttonhole soles cover useful operations. Quilting is possible, but a walking foot or free-motion foot is an optional purchase, not part of this seven-foot bundle. The published working space to the right of the needle is 170 mm. Support the weight of a large quilt separately and decide whether that space is enough for the work you intend to do.

A useful demonstration before buying

Bring scraps matching your project. Thread the needle, insert the front-loading bobbin case, sew a short straight and zigzag seam, then make a buttonhole in the actual fabric and interfacing. Try starting, stopping and pivoting with the pedal. For a bulky hem, include the folded seam intersection rather than a single flat layer of denim.

Record whether you can control the start, whether the layers feed without pushing, and whether the buttonhole fits your button. These observations are more relevant than the 860-stitch-per-minute maximum, which does not measure slow-speed control or penetration strength.

Who should shortlist it

The b35 is worth considering if you want adjustable mechanical stitch controls, a one-step buttonhole and front-loading bobbin access. Compare a computerized alternative if a speed limiter, needle-position button or sewing without a pedal is decisive. Neither design is universally easier for beginners: try the controls you will use.

For a used unit, price missing model-compatible feet, bobbins and the correct regional foot control before comparing the total with a complete new machine. For a new unit, check the seller’s bundle rather than treating all optional accessories as included.

This is a specifications-based review; no hands-on stitch, noise, durability or learning-time test is claimed. The manufacturer documents the functions, while the project demonstration above is a buyer decision method.

Questions before buying

Does the b35 have adjustable presser-foot pressure?

No. Its higher foot-lift position provides loading access, but it is not a pressure adjustment. The current manual and 30-series comparison distinguish these functions.

Is it suitable for a beginner?

Shortlist it if adjustable mechanical controls and a one-step buttonhole suit your projects. Try pedal starts and front-loading bobbin insertion; a beginner needing a speed limiter should compare a model with that control.

The current bernette b35 model page names the seven supplied soles. Compare those specific tools with the work you plan instead of treating seven soles as seven arbitrary stitch types.
