Knit topstitching is not one setting. A firm ponte pocket edge, a jersey T-shirt hem, and a stretch neckline need different amounts of give. Choose the finish by what the edge must do after sewing; only then adjust length, width, or tension.

These are starting paths, not universal dial numbers. Stitch defaults and safe ranges vary by model. Brother’s own guidance says some stitches cannot be adjusted, and its twin-needle instructions impose model-specific stitch and width restrictions. The machine manual and stitch chart therefore outrank a generic number copied from another machine.

Straight stitch, narrow zigzag, or twin needle?

Use straight stitch only when the line does not need much give

A straight stitch is visually crisp, but it does not create the same lateral movement as a zigzag. It can suit a stable knit detail that stays relatively still: a pocket edge, a decorative line on ponte, or a reinforced area on sweatshirt fleece. It is a poor default for a hem or neckline that must stretch over the body.

Test the finished seam, not just its appearance under the presser foot. Let the sample relax, then stretch it in the direction the garment will move. If the fabric stretches but the thread line becomes the hard stop, choose a stitch with more give.

Use a narrow zigzag when recovery matters more than a double-row finish

A narrow zigzag is the practical regular-machine choice for necklines, bindings, and edges that must recover. Start with the selected stitch’s documented default, make it only as wide as needed for movement, and test on the actual layer stack. A dense zigzag can stiffen the edge; an unnecessarily wide one can dominate the finish.

Do not treat zigzag width as a fabric category. The useful width depends on the stitch, machine, thread, presser foot, and seam. The safe method is to adjust within the manual’s range and turn the handwheel toward you through a full stitch cycle before sewing, checking that the needle clears the foot and plate.

Use a twin needle only after the compatibility checks pass

A twin needle can create the familiar two-row knit hem on a conventional machine. It is not a universal accessory. Confirm all of the following before buying or installing one:

  1. The machine manual permits twin-needle sewing.
  2. The needle system, spacing, and size are approved for the machine.
  3. The selected stitch is marked as twin-needle compatible.
  4. Any twin-needle mode is enabled.
  5. The width stays inside the manual’s limit.
  6. With the machine off, the handwheel can complete a stitch cycle without either needle touching the presser foot or plate.

Brother’s current CS7000X guidance, for example, requires an appropriate stitch, limits stitch width to 5.0 mm or less, and tells users to rotate the handwheel to check clearance. That is evidence for following a model’s chart, not permission to apply 5.0 mm to every machine.

Choose the needle by fabric behavior

SCHMETZ separates two commonly blurred categories:

  • Jersey (ball point): for knits and some stretch fabrics; its medium ball point is designed to avoid damaging knit fibers.

A safe setup order that isolates the problem

  1. Read the stitch chart. Confirm the stitch, needle, foot, and any twin-needle restriction.
  2. Install a suitable fresh needle. Use Jersey for ordinary knits or test Stretch for highly elastic fabric.
  3. Thread with the presser foot raised. This helps the upper thread seat in the tension mechanism.
  4. Return to the documented default. Do not automatically lower tension because the fabric is knit.
  5. Prepare a real seam sample. Match fabric, stabilizer, hem allowance, thread, and layer count.
  6. Check mechanical clearance. Turn the handwheel toward you before powered sewing, especially after a width or twin-needle change.
  7. Sew without pulling. Support the sample in front of and behind the foot.
  8. Let the sample relax, then stretch-test it. Judge both appearance and function.

This order prevents three causes—threading, needle selection, and stitch incompatibility—from being misdiagnosed as tension.

Buy a Jersey needle assortment when ordinary jersey or interlock is the recurring job and the machine uses the compatible home-sewing needle system. Buy a Stretch needle when highly elastic fabric keeps skipping after correct threading. Buy a twin needle only after the manual confirms the permitted system, spacing, stitch, and width.

Do not buy a new foot, needle pack, and thread merely because one seam waves. First rethread correctly, use a fresh suitable needle, return to the documented default, and sew without stretching the fabric. Those checks cost nothing and remove the most common false signals.
