For simple alterations within a $300 budget, compare Brother XM2701, SINGER 4423, Janome 2212, Brother ST371HD and SINGER Start 1304 by the hem or seam you need to change. A free arm, suitable foot and stitch adjustment are concrete features; no measured alteration-speed or durability comparison makes one the universal winner.

Compare by the alteration

Job Feature to check Shortlist distinction
Woven trouser hem Straight/blind-hem method, stitch adjustment and leg access XM2701, 4423, 2212 and ST371HD have adjustable dimensions; 1304 uses presets
Sleeve shortening Opening fits the free arm or can be sewn by another access method Demonstrate the actual cuff circumference; all five have a free-arm arrangement
Zipper work Correct ordinary/concealed zipper foot and needle clearance A supplied ordinary zipper foot is not automatically a concealed-zipper foot
New buttonhole One-step versus four-step workflow and button-size capacity XM2701, 4423 and ST371HD: one-step; 2212 and 1304: four-step
Bulky hem crossing Permitted needle/thread and sample feeding 4423 pressure adjustment is a control difference; model branding is not penetration evidence

Decide the new fit before stitching

Mark the desired length or seam position while accounting for the garment’s drape and use. Preserve the needed allowance before cutting away fabric. Unpick only the construction that needs changing and identify whether a lining, cuff, vent or original finish adds steps.

The machine sews the line you set; it does not decide the right fit. A fast straight seam is not a successful alteration if it removes movement room or distorts a sleeve. For an unfamiliar construction, baste and check fit before a permanent seam.

Compare the foot path, not just a free-arm claim

A narrow leg may be too small to slide freely around a given arm. Try the actual opening and check that it moves through the full seam. Sewing inside a tube on the flat bed can be practical when the free arm does not fit, but needs an unobstructed view and needle path.

For blind hems, test the folded construction and adjust how much the stitch catches. For an invisible zipper, identify the exact compatible concealed-zipper foot and budget for it when absent. A generic snap-on set is not established compatible from brand or appearance alone.

Use a realistic sample for thick and stretch fabrics

Sample the folded denim crossing within the machine’s limits instead of choosing ST371HD or 4423 solely by a heavy-duty label. A higher maximum speed does not demonstrate stronger slow-speed penetration. Stop if the needle or feed struggles; do not pull the garment through.

For knit hems, check both flatness and the extension needed in wear. A suitable needle and seam construction matter beyond stitch count. The 1304’s presets are a limit when you need a different stitch dimension, rather than an automatic benefit for occasional users.

Price the usable alteration setup

Include machine, tax, delivery and required feet, needles, thread, bobbins, measuring and pressing tools. At an illustrative 8% tax, a $300 ceiling permits $277.78 before tax before additions. No current Amazon price ranking is given here.

Choose XM2701 or ST371HD for their actual mechanical one-step workflow when a qualifying offer fits. Choose 4423 when pressure adjustment matters, 2212 when its mechanical/front-loading procedure suits you, or 1304 only when its presets support the intended alteration. Frequent use alone does not establish a different best model; the garment and required controls decide the comparison.

Two more models to compare for a first repair

If a speed ceiling matters more than adjustable pressure, the Brother CS7000X has a speed limiter, needle up/down and seven one-step buttonholes; its ten supplied feet are not ten buttonhole styles, and its table and quilting feet help only if those projects are planned. The Janome MOD-19 offers mechanical selection, 19 stitches, a needle threader, a top-loading bobbin and a four-step buttonhole, so decide whether manual buttonhole stages suit you. Before committing, thread the machine, set the stitch and sew your real layer combination, such as a woven hem, an opened shirt seam or a knit seam, then inspect for puckering and check the seam has the extension the garment needs. A strong stitch in fabric that tears beside it is not a successful repair. Keep the practice sample with its settings so the next job starts from a known combination, and follow the manual’s maintenance procedure rather than oiling or spraying canned air because a generic accessory kit suggests it.
